Your Impact through Jump

Here are just a few ways your participation and donations in support of Jump Rope for Heart have helped make a difference in the

lives of Canadians.

Heart Failure Research Network grant:

In 2022, $24.2 million in research supported 476 best-in-class researchers from across the country. $5 million supported the first-ever Heart Failure Research Network grant which will fund a team of 100 researchers led by Dr. Jean Rouleau at the Montreal Heart Institute, working together to improve prevention, detection, and management of heart failure.

Protecting youth and adults from nicotine:

Legislative changes introduced in 2022 included a new 20% tax on vaping products in Saskatchewan and a comprehensive ban on flavoured vaping products in the Northwest Territories. New federal regulations to revise tobacco health warning messages and place warnings directly on cigarettes will make Canada the first country in the world to introduce these types of health warnings.

Restricting the marketing of unhealthy foods to kids:

As a champion of the objectives of the Stop Marketing to Kids Coalition, Heart & Stroke was pleased to see new regulations in Health Canada’s 2022 regulatory plan, which would restrict the marketing of food and beverages high in sodium, sugars and saturated fat to children.

Empowering Canadian youth with brain and heart health knowledge:

In 2023, 770,678 students in 2,600 schools across Canada learned healthy habits and the signs of a stroke through participation in the Jump Rope for Heart.

Through the HeartSmartKids program we have reached 1,557 educators and 53,000 children across the country to encourages healthy habits. 463 were educators of Indigenous students who reached over 14,027 children and their families.

Sahaan

Jump Fundraiser

A few months before Sahaan was born his Nani suffered a major stroke. Sahaan did not have an opportunity to know what his Nani was like prior to her stroke. Sahaan's parents made it a priority to teach him the signs of a stroke. Sahaan says, "This cause will always be important to me because of my Nani suffering a stroke".

Last year, Sahaan participated in Jump for the first time and raised over $1,700 for Heart & Stroke.

Julian

Pediatric Stroke Survivor

At six months old, doctors discovered Julian had a hole in his heart. He underwent open heart surgery at three years old and afterward suffered a pediatric stroke. Julian is now five years old and is still actively recovering.

Julian’s mom, Joyce, says, “It's so important to advocate for pediatric Stroke and spread awareness that strokes happen at any age." She emphasizes, "It can happen to anyone, and knowing the signs is critical.”

Mackenzie

Jump Fundraiser

When Mackenzie was seven years old, her dad suffered a major stroke. “I am so thankful for everyone who helped save his life, and I am so happy to have my loving dad still here today,” says Mackenzie.

Mackenzie’s mom, Kim, says, “Mackenzie is very passionate about sharing her story and tries to raise as much as she can for Jump because she knows how important this cause is.”

Alyssa

Born with a Heart Condition

Alyssa was born with a congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot. Alyssa had her first heart surgery when she was just five months old.

Her mom, Megan, says, "Alyssa wouldn't be here if today's medicine wasn't as advanced as it is. Many moons ago, kids didn't make it to their teenage years with this defect. Thanks to continuing education and research, new ways to cure and maintain these issues and many others are possible!"

Kayla

Jump Fundraiser

“I want to jump for my dad because he had heart disease. I love him so much.” Kayla, 9, wrote these words for her late father, who died suddenly at 36 from a heart attack.

She raised over $7,000 and ended up the top Jump fundraiser in Canada.

Emily

Fast Lifesaver

Emily, 9, learned the FAST signs of stroke at a Jump event at her school in Prince George, B.C. A week later, she used them to save her grandmother’s life!

When Emily realized her grandmother was having a stroke at home, she knew to act FAST and get help.

Max

FAST Lifesaver

A few days after Max, 8, learned the FAST signs of stroke at a Jump kick-off assembly, his dad was unable to lift a cup with his left hand and Max realized his dad was having a stroke.

Knowing how to act FAST and get help saved his dad’s life

Seth

Cardiac Arrest Survivor

When Seth went into cardiac arrest at school, the principal began CPR, and then used an AED to restart Seth’s heart. After many weeks in the hospital, and surgery, Seth’s prognosis is good.

Seth’s school friends dedicated their 2021 Jump Event to Seth, raising over $10,000.
